Happy National Nutrition Month! As a Dietitian, I understand the power dietary change can have on a patient’s diabetes control, particularly for our patients with Type 2 Diabetes. If you are one of my CDE colleagues that is not of the Dietitian discipline, I encourage you, this National Nutrition Month, to make it part of your practice to refer your patients to a skilled Registered Dietitian. Often, patient’s insurance will have a list of in-network dietitians. Our patients often need a lot of support in healthy eating habits, so I also encouraged you to discuss diet with your patients by using a few simple open ended questions. “What dietary changes have you been considering making to help improve your diabetes control?” or “If we could wave a magic wand and your blood sugars were in good control, what specific dietary steps did you take to get you there?” are two great examples to get your patients thinking. Jot down each one of your patient’s responses to these questions and discuss each item at length to come up with SMART (Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Relevant and Timely) goals. It might be helpful to discuss specific steps your patient will have to do in order to accomplish their proposed goal, along with any barriers they anticipate encountering and how to overcome these barriers. You don't have to be a Dietitian or nutrition expert to positively impact your patients' dietary habits. Often, the answers are within themselves andA few simple questions can go a long way in your patients treatment. What other open ended questions do you like to use in your practice to help your patients set specific goals to improve blood sugar control through diet?
