Introverted Leaders

Hi. I’m Rachel, and I am an introvert.

I also happen to be a volunteer leader with AZAADE.

Perhaps you are an introverted diabetes educator too. In fact, I often find myself wondering where you other introverts are in the crowds at conferences, lectures, and exhibit halls. It’s difficult to tell, but one third to one half of the world’s population is supposedly introverted…I can’t possibly be the only one!

Being both an introvert and a volunteer leader is an interesting mix, requiring thoughtful balance to prevent full on burnout. Google tells me the ‘definition of introvert’ is: a shy, reticent, and typically self-centered person. Ouch, internet. If I had to define it, I’d say an introvert is simply someone who gets recharged from within. Whatever the best definition may be, we all know there are pros and cons of both types of ‘verts. We also know that nobody is exclusively one or the other.

Yet, individuals who lean towards introversion offer a unique spin on leadership- one that is refreshingly creative and attentively organized. So if you’re looking for introvert-friendly leadership opportunities, consider these essential volunteer roles:

-Brainstorming (think big!): membership, participation, marketing, education, advocacy, partnerships

-Reading/Writing: articles, blogs, posts, tweets, reviews

-Organizing: minutes, agendas, correspondence, CEU applications, projects, PowerPoints

-Finances: grant writing, budgeting, tracking

-Events: themes, layout, photography, videography, A/V

The Arizona Coordinating Body will soon post openings for 2015 leadership positions. So take a look, and if your inner introvert is intrigued, I hope you will consider joining us.
