AADE is always working for its members at both the Federal and State levels on issues that support and promote the diabetes educator. In addition, we are constantly monitoring legislation that affects diabetes educators, diabetes education and people with diabetes. When needed, AADE takes a position on an issue. These are current pieces of legislation that AADE is supporting, opposing or monitoring.

The Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) Act of 2011 (S.1468)

Introduced on August 2, 2011 by champion sponsor  Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and original co-sponsor Senator John Tester (D-MT) the Senate Diabetes Self-Management Training Act of 2011 is to amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to improve access to diabetes self-management training by authorizing credentialed diabetes educators to provide diabetes self-management training services, including as part of telehealth services, under part B of the Medicare program.

The U.S. House of Representatives companion bill was introduced on August 1, 2011 by champion sponsor  Representative Ed Whitfield (R-KY-1) and original co-sponsor Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO-1) the House Diabetes Self-Management Training Act of 2011 is to amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to improve access to diabetes self-management training by authorizing credentialed diabetes educators to provide diabetes self-management training services, including as part of telehealth services, under part B of the Medicare program.
