On July 10 th the San Diego LNG hosted an evening recognizing our diabetes educators at Cutwater Spirits. Educators were treated to appetizers while socializing and networking and given a rose in appreciation of their work. Ten vendors provided educational material and information for helping our patients. We also acknowledged the founding members of the organization by displaying pictures and items from the early years of the organization. These items included awards earned by the organization, pamphlets provided to schools, buttons promoting educators, games for learning about managing diabetes, and many other items. Early members present were Gayle Lorenzi ...

What a fabulous start to this week - attending the 2019 AADE Public Policy Meeting in Washington DC with approximately 60 national colleagues, representing 35 states. Wonderful advocacy discussions and updates on Monday, followed by the ability on Tuesday to meet with Senators and Congressmen and women to discuss and educate on Senate Bill S814 and House Bill HB1840 - Expanding Diabetes Self-Management Training Act. Our goal was to try to increase the number of co-sponsors. Was at 14 co-sponsors on Tuesday and now at 15... but there is more to obtain and we need your help to do so. The bill would: Allow additional providers (eg hospital, ED) managing ...

Last month AB 848, was referred to the Assembly Appropriations Suspense File and it needs to be voted off suspension by May 17th. At this time, we need to reach out to our members of the Appropriations Committee and let them know how important this legislation is for people with diabetes on Medi-Cal to manage their fluctuations in blood glucose levels. Special Emphasis should be placed on reaching out to Appropriations Committee Chair Lorena Gonzalez, (D80) San Diego. Those of you who live in her district please consider visiting her office, posting on social media, emailing or calling her district office to voice how important it is that Governor Newsom ...

Type 3 Diabetes?

I was recently speaking with a group of educators at a conference and mentioned my mom was my first diabetes educator and how much I learned from her just having her as my mom. Since I grew up with a T1D mom, one of the educators noted that I was a T3D: a family member of someone with diabetes. I am wondering if anyone else has used that term and how the diabetes community at large might feel about that term. I found it an interesting idea and realized that parents of T1D kids and teens are definitely in a unique position as T1D does affect their lives daily in so many ways. Are there specific resources you all share with families of those with diabetes? ...

Good things don't happen without effort. When we talk to patients about making positive changes in their lives we include the time, planning, tools and effort it will take to plan, implement and sustain the change. Unlike gravity, that is energy that pulls a body to rest, the energy we expend creating change in our lives, relationships and our environment is something we have to continually exert. Positive results take constant work and usually the greater the effort the greater the reward. What are some of the things in our lives that we value- family, friends, personal space, faith, avocation, education? Nothing we value has much worth without putting something ...

A coalition was formed after Governor Brown’s veto of AB 447 by Assembly Member Gray, which was widely supported and passed the California Legislature unanimously in 2017. AB 447 would have amended Section 14132 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, to add continuous glucose monitors and related supplies required for use with those monitors, to the schedule of benefits under the Medi-Cal program for the treatment of diabetes when medically necessary, subject to utilization controls. In addition, AB 447 would have allowed the Department of Health Care Services to require manufacturers of continuous glucose monitors to enter into a rebate agreement with the department. ...
