As we have endured the past few months of COVID-19 and all of the changes that have come along with this pandemic, we have been led to learn a lot in this time. We have learned a lot about ourselves, with many working from home or suddenly balancing work and home schooling. We have learned how rapidly the provision of healthcare can change with the introduction of telehealth. We have also learned that people do not always “avoid it like the plague”, thus the need for public education and presence of trusted experts providing education in the media. Additionally, while working with people with diabetes, we may realize just how vital it is that we are providing ...

Diabetes Distress

Diabetes distress is a hot topic for us as Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. Here is a link to a very throrough article concerning this topic. According to Dr. Lawrence Fisher, Research Director at the Behavioral Diabetes Institute (BDI), Diabetes Distress or “DD” refers to all the fears and worries that people with diabetes experience on a daily basis. Fear of complications or the fear of hypoglycemia are examples of the types of concerns that may cause DD. I interviewed Dr. Fisher last month to discuss DD and who was at risk for it. He was adamant that I understand how Diabetes Distress is a very normal part of living with diabetes affecting not ...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the leading causes of liver damage. 1 About 3.2 million people in the United States are thought to be infected with hepatitis C virus, with the highest prevalence among people born between 1945-1965. 2 Hepatitis C is a blood borne pathogen which is transmitted through risk factors including injection-drug use, intranasal drug use, accidental needle pricks and tattoos to name a few. 3 Recently a link has been found between the HCV and metabolic syndromes showing that HCV acts as an independent predictive factor for diabetes mellitus. 1 Understanding the way HCV works and the medications that show the most benefit ...

The Endocrine Society and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Five Things HCP and Patients Should Question Download PDF 1 Avoid routine multiple daily self-glucose monitoring in adults with stable type 2 diabetes on agents that do not cause hypoglycemia. Once target control is achieved and the results of self-monitoring become quite predictable, there is little gained in most individuals from repeatedly confirming. There are many exceptions, such as for acute illness, when new medications are added, when weight fluctuates significantly, when A1c targets drift off course and in individuals who need monitoring to maintain targets. ...

One of my favorite sessions took place on Friday morning at the general session. The topic title was "Guided Imagery and the New Mind-Body Breakthroughs in Diabetes Care" The speaker was a psychotherapist and author, Belleruth Naparstek, LSW, BCD. She reviewed the latest research related mind-body resources with a focus on program ideas and practice solutions for stress, fitness and sleep. Later, the suthor was available at the AADE Bookstore for a book signing and dialogue with members. Her ideas are very practical and can be found in her book and Guided Imagery CD. Recently I attended an educational program attended by Illinois CDEs and after the presentation we discussed the critical events that will take place effective July 1st. The Medicare DM testing supply reimbursement will be a challenging concern for all educators and our Medicare patients with diabetes. We need to be proactive and join together with ideas that will assist one another in our state. What suggestions can you share with all of us? Check out the Michigan blog related to the same topic and see what they are doing. What can we share with our neighboring state? What can we learn from one another?

What a great experience! I was lucky enough to attend the Leadership Forum in Chicago, which is a wonderful city. The lights, the hustle and bustle and the shopping were just a few added perks. More importantly, there was a wealth of ideas on building communities, how to be an effective but lazy leader, how to utilize My AADE and many other topics. What I came away with was a great sense of how dedicated diabetes educators are and how much we enjoy helping patients and each other to achieve great things, Great things often happen in small, sometimes imperceptible ways I also am proud of AADE for taking on the multitude of challenges as we move forward ...
