Diabetes Apps You Should Know

By:  Rosalyn Padiyara Vellurattil, PharmD, CDE

Are you ready to get App-Happy?  Specifically, Diabetes App-Happy?

Technology is a wonderful thing.  Utilizing it to make your life (and the lives of your patients) easier = WONDERFUL AND SMART!  Now, how many times have you had to try analyzing blood glucose numbers from loose, sometimes stained, scraps of paper with illegible writing?  We can all definitely benefit from learning more about Apps (short for applications).

Did you know that a variety of Diabetes Software Apps are available that are compatible with a plethora of smartphones (or other mobile devices) that your patients can use at no charge?  Who wouldn’t love a great freebie?!!

Another perk of using an App is that it is MOBILE.  Patients don’t have to remember to bring their logbook and pen wherever they go.  They can log directly into their phone or mobile device (something that everyone carries around with them EVERYWHERE), and be as detailed as they want.

From recording blood glucose numbers, to logging medications/injections taken, carbohydrates consumed, and exercise performed...  Not only do patients get to see what their management looks like, but have them send you their reports, and you get to see them too!  CLINICIANS REJOICE!

Below is a table of a few FREE 2012 Diabetes Software Apps you can recommend patients check out:1

Here’s to getting Diabetes App-Happy everyone!  Cheers!

Don’t see your favorite Diabetes App of 2012 on this table? Tell us about it!

APPS

The APP that I personally use is My Fitness Pal.  You can log your food, exercise and weight.

Diabetes Apps

I absolutely do recommend them, Elaine. Also, I ask patients who have smartphones if they've used any APPS, if so, how they like the particular APP, and how it's helped them with their management. That helps in making recommendations to other patients who may be interested. Patients just love the glucose trackers - it's so much easier just to plug their BS number into their phone!

Diabetes Apps: Additional Info

Thank you for your post Rosalyn!

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has published a list of reviews of the top rated apps for weight management, diabetes, and gluten-free eating:

Since many of our patients are in need of support and education in one, two, or all three of these areas, I think Rosalyn's post, as well as information from other sources, can get educators and patients started in the right direction.

Share your experiences with the latest Diabetes Management APPS

I am just curious to hear more about this topic. We attended an AADE Webinar that featured some of the new APPS. Do you actually recommend any of them?
