Statement from Iowa ADCES on racial equity

Official Statement from ADCES:

Iowa ADCES would like to add an additional sentiment to this statement for all our Iowa members:

The leadership team at Iowa ADCES stand beside our members and patients who identify as Black/African American, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). As a professional community, we do not support the systemic inequities within the United States leading to racial and ethnic disparities seen in health and diabetes care. Our members, and the diverse communities they represent, are important to us. As a profession dedicated to health and well-being through positive healthcare experiences, we acknowledge prejudice in diabetes care and management exist, in part, because of policies and practices disproportionately having a negative effect on BIPOC communities. In order for us to best aid culturally diverse populations in the regions we serve, we also need to support and encourage diversity within our profession. Iowa ADCES believes representation matters. We are listening to your concerns and hear the call for change.

ADCES has also compiled a list of resources to help you support Black communities. We have also added several other resources given to us by the Diversity Liaison at Des Moines Public Schools. We encourage you evaluate yourselves and your organizations for unconscious bias and actively work towards eliminating it by providing culturally competent education, resources, and management. We hope the materials we provide will help lead you there.
