Hello, everyone. Please see the below urgent request from a University of Iowa student. She is requesting blinded (no patient info) data regarding goal completion for DSMT program participants, in specific Iowa counties . Please email Sydney directly ( sydney-tylke@uiowa.edu ) with any information you can provide for her. She needs this info by September 16, 2020. I would like data on the number and proportion of DSMES participants that achieved ADCES health goals (lowered A1C levels, foot checks, eye exams, % of body weight reduction, whatever was measured, etc). I request data from DSMES programs in the following counties: Des Moines, Mills, ...

Official Statement from ADCES: Iowa ADCES would like to add an additional sentiment to this statement for all our Iowa members: The leadership team at Iowa ADCES stand beside our members and patients who identify as Black/African American, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). As a professional community, we do not support the systemic inequities within the United States leading to racial and ethnic disparities seen in health and diabetes care. Our members, and the diverse communities they represent, are important to us. As a profession dedicated to health and well-being through positive healthcare experiences, we acknowledge prejudice in ...

A message from our President, Kelly Antinori-Lent, and our CEO, Charles Macfarlane: In 2018, AADE embarked on a new vision: to drive optimal outcomes for people with diabetes through the integration of clinical management, education, prevention and support. Your contributions were vital to moving this vision forward. We listened when you told us that while self-management education is at the heart of what you do, it isn't all that you do. We listened when you said clinical management is a key part of the role, as is integrating all elements of care for the person with diabetes. And we listened, when in early 2019, we began an extensive research ...

T1International Blog What’s in a Name? January 2020 Courtney Slater, RD, LD, CDE, CPT What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet (Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet). What’s in a name? That which we call diabetes, by any other name would still be horrible. The goal of T1International, despite being an organization predominantly advocating for patients with type 1 diabetes and having “T1” in its name, is to help all people with diabetes gain access to the medication and supplies they need to survive. When it comes down to it, does it really matter which type of diabetes one lives with? Are those ...

Iowa AADE will be taking over the Diabetes Busters program from the ADA. Because the ADA is no longer present in Iowa, they needed another organization to take over the project. Wendy and I had a discussion and felt this was an important undertaking and needed to continue within the state. What is Diabetes Busters? Diabetes Busters is an educational program for 4th grade students. This program is 1 hour long and teaches children about diabetes, and food and activity choices to help manage and prevent type 2 diabetes. Students rotate through three different stations led by volunteers. Students will take a simple pre-test at the beginning of the ...

In May, Wendy Mobley-Bukstein and I traveled to Washington, D.C., for the annual AADE Public Policy Forum. We had two days jam-packed with learning, advocacy updates, meetings with legislators and networking. Sunday evening, we had an opportunity to network with other diabetes educators from various backgrounds from all over the country. We walked to a nearby restaurant and spent several hours talking about the struggles and successes educators and patients face, as well as talking a little bit about what we do in our home states. Diabetes educators from Colorado talked about their prescription co-pay cap bill (which had not yet passed). Pennsylvania educators ...

The Iowa CB has been discussing putting together a state meeting. Last year in November, we put together a 1/2 day CEU event in Des Moines. This meeting drew in 10 participants. The weather was bad that day, freezing rain and ice. When we discussed putting this event together, we paired it up with the Iowa Diabetes Summit, hoping that it would attract participants from the Summit. AND we did! One person. That one person has changed things for us though. She has helped us become a more diverse group that now has dietitians, pharmacists and nurses represented! We learned a lot about what goes into planning these events. The amount of time that it takes to fill ...

In life, wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easy button to fix problems that we have in our lives? You have seen the Staples commercial, the one with the red easy button! It would be so nice to just press a button and poof our problems would be solved. Life is not lived in commercials, cartoons, sitcoms or even movies. Life is lived in the real day-to-day actions of individuals who are passionate about what they believe in. I have never been afraid to use my voice to help myself and others. Several weeks ago, I started inquiring and advocating for persons with diabetes who have Medicaid. On April 1, Iowa Medicaid changed the way that they reimburse diabetes ...

On August 22, Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Expanding Access to Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) Act (S. 3366) in the U.S. Senate. This is the Senate companion to legislation of the same name introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 5768) in May, by Reps. Tom Reed (R-NY) and Diana DeGette (D-CO). AADE worked in collaboration with the Diabetes Advocacy Alliance and our Senate champions to introduce this important piece of legislation. The introduced bill would reduce barriers and improve Medicare beneficiaries' access to DSMT service by: Allowing the initial 10 hours of DSMT ...
