Hi, everyone!

I am a part of the American Diabetes Association Young Professionals Leadership Council (YPLC). Our Iowa AADE President, Jodi, is a part of the Community Leadership Board for the ADA. We are holding a fundraising event, in conjunction with Camp Hertko Hollow, in May. This fundraiser will benefit both the ADA and Camp Hertko Hollow. We are having a Kentucky Derby theme and hope you and/or your organization are willing to join us for an evening of fun!

Please see more information below about the Derby. You can contact Daphne Dickens if you or your company has questions or needs more information!

Thank you! I hope to see you there. :)

IOWA DIABETES ORGANIZATIONS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS

DES MOINES, IA (March 28, 2017) ‑‑ The American Diabetes Association – Iowa and Camp Hertko Hollow invite you to Derby for Diabetes on May 6, a gala event celebrating 50 years of educating and supporting Iowans living with diabetes. We will be honoring Dr. Ed Hertko and his important work in laying the foundation for these two organizations in Iowa in 1968. Funds raised at Derby for Diabetes will benefit both the American Diabetes Association – Iowa (for their research at the University of Iowa and other diabetes education programming) and Camp Hertko Hollow (to provide children the opportunity to attend a week of diabetes camp).

All Iowans who have impacted and/or been impacted by the organizations, will gather on May 6, 2017 at Prairie Meadows Casino and Hotel. The derby themed celebration includes cocktails and chef’s tastings, a wine pull, live auction and other entertainment provided by champion fundraiser and auctioneer, David Whitaker. The event is open to the public and derby attire is encouraged. Ticket and sponsorship information is available at www.derbyfordiabetes2017.org.

Over 300,000 Iowans are living with diabetes (11.4% of the population) in addition, 810,000 have prediabetes. Both organizations provide valuable information and assistance to those individuals and their families living with this disease through research, support, recreation, education, and advocacy. Dr. Ed Hertko, the founder of the American Diabetes Association in Iowa, and Camp Hertko Hollow states, “50 years ago nothing of great significance was being done to educate people about their diabetes.  We’ve come a long way since 1968 – but with the prediction that 1 in 3 people will have diabetes by 2020, much work is still to be done.”
