What a great annual meeting and conference! I have been re-energized and am learning a lot from my fellow diabetes educators. One take home tidbit I learned from the general session speaker this morning- Brian Wansink, author of "Mindless Eating" book is to get rid of my short, squatty drinking glasses and replace them with tall, skinny ones. Why- it has been shown that we fill taller skinnier glasses with less & this may lead to weight loss. What is your favorite tidbit or education tool or advice have you learned at the annual conference?

Perfect Timing - Dr. Wansink's quote

Next Monday, those that attended AADE from my workplace (IDC in MPLS) are preenting a 'Lunch and Learn" segment on highlights from AADE. My job is to do a brief overview and I was thinking I needed to check my notes to see something that would capture the flavor of Dr.Wansink's  lecture. I love the quote from m "Mindless Eating"...Eating straight from a box, bag, or serving bowl is the recipe for regret. Thanks for sharing.

Dinner plate vs. lunch plate

I have tried this tactic in my home. At some gatherings, I have had people say, "Give me the bigger plate, then I won't come back for seconds". What I do is have both sizes and then people can choose what size works best for them...

AADE12

This was my first AADE conference!  It was great!  I came back with so much information and now I am putting all these useful bits of knowledge into OneNote on my computer so I can refresh my memory as needed and put it all to work for me.  I bought Brian Wansink's book, "Mindless Eating".  He says in there that eating straight from a box, bag, or serving bowl is the recipe for regret.  How true!

AADE12

My conference started early as being the delegate for Advocacy day! WOW! I felt very ignorant before going into that training but by golly I may be hooked! So much knowledge to be gained by listening to our political leaders, even if we disagree! I also enjoyed meeting alot of energetic Michigan members I didn't have the pleasure of knowing prior! Very Good Conference!

AADE conference

One of my favorite tips was using a luncheon sized plate vs. a dinner plate.  I've heard it before, but it was interesting to hear about.....when they studied and measured what people would serve themselves on a dinner plate vs. lunch plate, the group found 25% less food was served across the board with lunch size).  I have been using that size myself since returning.

Also, I had a patient tell me on Monday that she uses a lunch plate...I was able to tell her about the study Dr. Wansink did at Cornell.  She liked hearing that there was evidence to support that theory.
