Cloves and Blood sugar control

By Timira Perry posted 08-10-2012 09:23

I had a patient contact me this morning wondering about the spice cloves and whether it really helps with blood glucose control or metabolism like cinnamon. She said she heard this on the Dr. Oz program yesterday. Anyone have any insight or information about this?

Cautions about Spices

Agreed about some caution is reasonable in recommending therapies such as herbs and spices for which we don't have RCT evidence. But as a prescriber who feels horrible about prescribing medications that had been FDA approved that are now off the market because of the deaths and disabilities they caused, FDA approval is, unfortunately, not proof that something is safe.

Cinnamon, cloves, Oh My!

There is a lot of consumers that use cinnamon, cloves, and other herbs that they have "heard" about that helps diabetes. I agree with Denise, there isn't always a lot of research out there about the herbal medications. And yes, they may interfer with each other, and other prescription medications. It is always important for people to add their herbals to their list of medications. Thanks for this thought provoking post. I'm sure we will continue to hear more and more about this type of topic.

Cloves caution

Thanks Denice for your input and research! I also caution or remind my patients we need to know everything they are taking not just prescription medications because herbal supplements or others may interfere or cause problems with them. I have also had several patients asking about cinnamon and curcumin ( a member of the ginger family).

Research on cloves

I did a bit of research and foundi that it is still in research and development stage. Most articles stated that cloves are not for everyone and may not work for everyone. Another thing to remember is cloves are non prescription and they are not FDA approved. May interfere with prescription meds already on board.
