AADE -to- ADCES: A quick guide

By Sarah Terranova posted 02-23-2020 09:41

You may have noticed that in the last few months you have been receiving and influx of emails from AADE/ADCES, about changes in our name, seen things about "repositioning", and maybe even seen some colleagues change their email signature to include CDCES as opposed to CDE.

If you have been wondering about this, but don't have time (do we as Diabetes Educators, ever have an abundance of spare time?!) to look into this - this is a "quick guide" just for you.

Are we AADE, or ADCES?

ADCES.  Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

Why was this done?

To position us (Diabetes Educators) as leaders in diabetes care, and is designed to more accurately describe to all what we do.

Sounds great, but will this impact my CDE credential?

Short answer is NO (YAY!!!) The CDE credential is owned and managed by the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE), so remember you need to stay current with ADCES, BUT you also need to stay current and in good standing with NCBDE (keep up on those CEUs!!!!). NCBDE as of 2020 is also transitioning to "Certification Board for Diabetes Care & Education" (CBDCE).

What this means for now is business as usual- keep logging your CEUs on the NCBDE/CBDCE website, renew your credential every five year by either submission of those CEUs or retaking the exam; but provided you are currently a CDE in good standing, go ahead and change that CDE to CDCES.

This also does not change the eligibility requirements for renewal or initial sitting - but just like before, they could change, and if they do will be on the website, and clearly stated prior to renewal/initial sitting of the exam.

Effective 2020 anyone initially sitting the exam, or renewing will receive their certificates and wallet cards that indicate the CDCES credential.

If you would like additional info I recommend navigating here, and here, as well as here.
