I want to thank those of you who have responded to the survey.  Just as snippet of what the current responses suggest.

There’s still time!  Go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J9P85YF

Demographics:

An examination of zip codes supports we have received feedback from all corners of the state!  Yeah!

Approximately 73% are AADE members (survey respondents only need to be diabetes educators, they do not have to be AADE members).

Only about 36% are Certified Diabetes Educators (keep this in mind when you read the results involving the the CDE).

40% don’t believe they are eligible for the CDE - we do not identify if its discipline, practice hours or continuing education that makes them believe they are not eligible.

Almost 56% intend to sit for the CDE exam in the future (approximately 8% are not CDEs nor do they intend to sit for the CDE).

Regarding the CDE discipline requirement . . . the answers support the belief that the NCBDE has the discipline requirement about right with a slight tendency toward leniency.  The following comments may support the leniency belief . . .

“I have a concern about the requirements for dietitians, exercise specialist and exercise physiologist having active registration or certificate and not licensure.”

“Need to specify degree for exercise specialist.”

Although I have had multiple persons debate the practice hours with me, those responding to the survey believe the 1000 practice hours (400 hours earned in the year before applying) required by NCBDE is about right.

The NCBDE continuing education requirement has strong support as being about right with a tendency toward supporting additional hours (50% believe this requirement is lenient).

Overall, the support for the CDE is strong as evidenced by this comment . . .

If there is only one instructor at that site that one instructor should be a CDE. Each program should have a CDE not just be able to contract a CDE or nurse to do this

The survey includes questions about the AADE’s BC-ADM certification.  Overall, survey responses believe AADE is requiring the right stuff.

There were three additional pieces of data from survey responses:

  • Diabetes educators need recognition, the CDE and BC-ADM are good recognitions, but that licensure for diabetes educators would be supported.
  • Additionally, 75% of respondents believe the NCBDE’s CDE expands a discipline’s scope of practice - and, yes, I personally have many people stress this point to me.
  • There is support that Level 2 diabetes educators have a role in diabetes education with supervision and guidance from a credentialed diabetes educator.

Take a few minutes and share how you feel about the questions in our survey.  We’re eager to hear your feedback.
