As we move into September, the promise of autumn is just around the corner. This is my favorite time of the year – the weather starts to cool, the leaves turn amazing colors and the idea of curling up with a good book under a soft blanket is so appealing! With autumn on the way, this is a great time to encourage outdoor activity and enjoyment of the season. Here are 5 diabetes-friendly things I encourage you to get out and do this autumn: Take a nature walk to enjoy the sights and smells of changing leaves. Enjoy the break from heat and humidity and go out and take a scenic nature walk. You do not have to go far – around your own neighborhood can ...

Summer is Here!

While this summer has certainly started out in a different nature than most, people are beginning to think about summer activities. As states and businesses open up post-COVID, people are itching to get out of the house and some are starting to travel. Traveling for persons with diabetes takes a lot of extra thought and consideration. As healthcare providers, we have done a great job asking them if they have traveled recently, and now we need to focus on also asking if they plan to travel in the near future. This provides an opening into an important conversation about planning appropriately to make sure medications are refilled and packed in an ...

Happy end of May! I've spent my weekend enjoying some time outdoors and soaking up some vitamin D. I think some time in the sun (with SPF 50) was good for my mental health. As May is Mental Health month, I had some self-reflection on my experience in the last few months. After quarantining, job changes, and missing my family who live too far away to see, I know how important self care is more than ever. If you or someone you know needs additional resources related to mental health, please visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) website. https://www.nami.org/Home As we move into June, I encourage you to take some time for yourself and do something ...

So much has changed these last few weeks with COVID-19. The need for social distancing, stay at home orders and the uncertainty of how long we will be in this extraordinary situation. I feel blessed to have the ability to work from home, but it comes with its own stressors. My stressors; however present, pale in comparison to the healthcare providers in the trenches or those that don’t even have the option to work from home. It’s important for our mental health that we stay connected emotionally while we support each other, our patients, healthcare providers and families. Zoom is a video conferencing service, that can be free for up to 40min. Skype, Google ...

Many of us have started more readily utilizing innovative ways to provide patient care and education since COVID-19. I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little of my telework experience. Three weeks ago I was seeing patients in clinic with advanced practice students, introductory students, and a pharmacy resident by my side. Things quickly changed as they did for many others. I found myself scrambling to complete telework training and agreements, adjusting advanced practice student schedules and assignments and resident activities, along with recording lecture content due to the university moving to all online coursework delivery. We have always had ...

Happy end of January! I always feel like this month lasts forever—it’s so dark, it’s freezing out, and at least here in Kansas City, the snow will NOT stop! This January I was able to travel to (also cold) Chicago for the 2020 Leadership Forum, and I wanted to share a little about my experience there. Each January, leaders from Coordinating Bodies/Local Networking Groups and Communities of Interest gather to network and share best practices to grow relationship databases and help promote activities, events, and membership throughout the year. I got to hear about the vision, strategic plan, and rebranding of AADE directly from President Kellie Antinori-Lent ...

It’s National Diabetes Awareness Month in November and a great opportunity to further educate people about this condition. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) approximately 700,000 Missourians are living with diabetes, which is ~13.2% of adults. 1 There are also about 152,000 adults that are unaware they have diabetes. 1 Diabetes is a global epidemic and November 14 th marks World Diabetes Day. This day was chosen because it happens to be the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting, in 1922 along with Charles Best. In the pursuit of finding a calendar of events in Missouri, I did a google search that led me to ...

My first AADE

Going into my first experience at AADE I was very excited, filled with ambition and the motivation to attend many sessions. The first day at the Coordinating Body Networking Reception, Missouri had a great table with good attendance. I was able to meet several of our members and see several familiar faces. The next morning began the sessions and I was up and out of my hotel room by 5:30am. I didn’t get moving that early again 😊 but it was a great session on CGMs and glad I attended. The AADE app was a great tool for being really organized, adding sessions to your schedule, and even finding your way around the convention center. There were several ...

Candidate 2020 Amanda Stahnke, Pharm.D., BCACP Glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) work by stimulating insulin release from glucagon-like-peptide 1 receptors on pancreatic beta cells, slowing gastric emptying, reducing glucagon release and increasing satiety. 1 A 1.5% reduction in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is typically seen with these agents. Prior to June 2019, the only GLP-1 RAs shown to improve cardiovascular (CV) outcomes were liraglutide (Victoza) and semaglutide (Ozempic). In the LEADER trial, ...

AADE 2019 Public Policy Forum Monday, May 20, 2019, marked the first day of AADE Advocacy day in Washington, DC. I was amazed at the number of health care professionals who have traveled across the 35 states to attend this fantastic event. Karen Kemmis, AADE President, jump-started this advocacy event. The key focus areas for the 2019 Public Policy Forum was: Federal Legislation to expand access to DSMET (H.R. 1840, S.814) Building relationships among members of Congress, AADE leadership, and industry partners, and Developing advocacy infrastructure to strengthen communication and engagement between the AADE and state coordinating bodies. Legislation Impacting NP Practice The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner ® continues to resonate on Capitol Hill. Since the Health Policy Conference this past February, we have seen an uptick in cosponsors for important NP legislation which can affect CDE practice, as well. The Diabetic Shoe bill already has more cosponsors then it did in the 115 th Congress. Please keep up the momentum and continue to reach out to your Members of Congress and urge them to support this key legislative issue impacting NP/CDE practice.

Diabetic Shoe Bill Introduced in the 116 th Congress On January 28th, in both chambers, the Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act was introduced. Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Tom Reed (R-NY) and Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Susan Collins (R-ME) are continuing to champion this legislation. These bipartisan bills would authorize nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) to certify a Medicare beneficiary’s need for therapeutic shoes, thus improving timeliness and access to care while reducing costs.
