I have a new 91st Representative to the Missouri House of Representatives. She is young, an attorney, a mother, and got elected on her first try. I thought I would like to meet with her and talk about Diabetes and her support or lack of support for our issues. I tried for an appt and really it was a long time to get a response, months but it came with an apology for how sorry she was that she had overlooked my email. She picked a place for us to meet in my area and I prepared by reading the latest stats and my thoughts about CGM and the cost of insulin, my two biggest issues needing attention. But when I met with her, I was surprised she wanted to talk about how diabetes affected you and employment ?? Boy was I surprised until I later found out why she asked about this. She is planning a TownHall meeting at Webster University involving Employment and Disability and actually asked me to attend after we had our meeting. I am of course delighted to help her out and look forward to continuing a relationship with her. I was very nervous but she listened to every word I said. It was a great experience to share some of my ideas with her and have her write a thank you note to me.!! What a great experience. I explained what CDEs were and why people need to meet one if they have been diagnosed with diabetes. Joan McGinnis, MSN, RN,CDE Financial Leader for the Missouri Coordinating Board. I have been a CDE for 30+ years and hope some of you meet with your legislators. They need to hear from you about what you do and what you know and where they can get support for some of their issues.
