The July 2017 issue of AADE In Practice has articles of  widely varied interests, including one by Sandra Bollinger, PharmD, CGP, CDE, RPh,FASCP, now of Cape Girardeau. Sandy has authored an article titled: "Relaxed Renal Guidelines for Metformin". She.discusses why the FDA revised its Black Box warning & the newer FDA renal recommendations for dosing Metformin. "The use of eGFR has replaced the use of serum creatinine for measuring kidney function when prescribing & treating patients with Metformin".

Melissa Dobbins, MS,RD,LD,CDE, of Wilmette, Illinois, posted an article featuring Podcasts as a social media platform: "The Social Media Sweet Spot: Where Diabetes & Podcasting Intersect" . She notes that the "explosion of social media has resulted in more information being available to the public, but without any guarantee of credibility. Diabetes Educators have the Education, training, & experience that together form a solid foundation on which social media skills can be built".

"The (Not So Scary) Truth about U-500 Insulin" is by Nancy Olson, FNP, CDE, BCADM. She discusses strategies for her Practice's appropriate referral regarding initiation of  & treatment with U-500 insulin therapy, best practice info for injections, as well as safety & cost considerations. While the information in Nancy's article represents her work experiences & is not intended to serve as treatment guidelines, she includes a "U-500 Patient Safety Contract", & sample U-500 Dose Calculations for the U-100 syringe, the U-500 Kwikpen and U-500 syringes. Sample U-500 prescriptions are also noted.

Please read these & other articles shared by Educator Colleagues, in the July AADE in Practice periodical.
