Prepping for AADE Annual 2018
It’s that amazing time of year again when we, as diabetes educators, gather to expand our knowledge base, teach others, network, and enjoy the company of so many great people. AADE Annual is right around the corner and you haven’t registered I encourage you to do so. There will be up to 32.5 hours of CE offered at the event and many other activities. Educational Tracks for this year’s meeting include population health, technology, mastering diabetes complications, and psychosocial/behavioral. Looking for these tracks as you begin planning and throughout the meeting are always helpful. Some highlights of each day are below.
Thursday, 8/16/18:
- CB/CI Networking Reception: This is always a fun event with representation from the majority of CBs and COIs present. Your own MO CB will have a table and would love for you to come see us to discuss what is going on in your practice, your city/town, and just to get to know you more. The event runs from 5:30-7pm and will be held in the Hilton Baltimore Hotel, Key Ballroom 12. We hope you can join us!
Friday, 8/17/18:
- To start your morning the President will address attendees and the first General Session will occur, which will cover finding where diabetes educators fit in the ever changing world of healthcare. I think it will be a great way to enter the meeting and look forward to Donna Ryan’s and Dr. Gabbay’s presentations.
- Throughout the day sessions will cover everything from population health topics, motivational interviewing, diabetes complications, diabetes prevention programs and so much. Several sessions I plan on attending are: Multi-Faceted and Multi-Disciplinary Strategies in Practice to Manage Overweight and Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes Physiology to Care Plan: A Case Study Approach, and Back to the Future of Hypertension Management, but there are so many great options. MO CB’s own Andrew Bzowyckyj, PharmD, BCPS, CDE will be discussing utilization of an EMR to assist with identifying patients who may be less likely to attend DSMES and how to overcome some of those barriers at 5pm.
Saturday, 8/18/18:
- Zumba starts at 6am, so don’t shoot too many hoops at the Hoopla! Event sponsored by mySugr on Friday evening. J
- Following Zumba, the General Session will be presented by Dr. Stout discussing Pathways to Population Health and the role we play as diabetes educators.
- Sessions will be offered throughout the day, including Modeling Physical Activity: From talk to Action!, meet the authors poster session, and Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy: Individuals and Educators Team Up For Success. Again, there so many great session offered throughout the day.
- BD/Lilly Customer Appreciate Event starts at 7pm!
Sunday, 8/19/18:
- The general session for Sunday delivered by Dr. Powell will discuss the National Action Plan to Prevent Adverse Events, specifically focusing on diabetes medications, hypoglycemia, and tools that may be beneficial to diabetes educators.
- This is again a day full of great sessions! The “Zebras in the Herd: The Less Common Types of Diabetes” was very informational and interesting last year and I am sure will be great again this year. Andrew will make another appearance, this time presenting on new and coming medications. There is an additional chance to meet the poster authors, the AADE Annual business meeting (1-2pm), and sessions later in the day discussing mental health and diabetes, reducing CV risk, and hypoglycemia.
- The AADE Celebration Event is from 8-10pm. Don’t forget to purchase your ticket!!
Monday, 8/20/18:
- Zumba again!! 6-7am…
- Information regarding Peer Support Communities and diabetes and mental health will be the focus of the General Session.
- Sessions throughout the day will cover telehealth, medication persistence, neuropathies, and smoking.
- Sessions will end at 1:30pm
Wow, that was a lot and I didn’t even touch on some other wonderful sessions offered during the meeting. It seems it will be another extremely successful meeting with great education, networking, and fun activities. Feel free to share with the MO CB any sessions that may be presented by fellow educators in our state or ones you feel are going to be great to attend. If you haven’t started planning consider taking a look at the online planner (https://plan.coreapps.com/tristar_aade18/customScreen/aboutShowPhoenix) to start making AADE Annual 2018 your best meeting yet! Once at the meeting don’t forget to utilize the AADE Events app. I hope to see many of you soon!
Take care,
Amanda
