November honors our Military Service Members & diabetes Educators

The month of November gives us the opportunity to recognize and appreciate the many sacrifices and contributions of our Military Veterans and Service Men and Women, active, retired, reserve Members, and their families for their unselfish dedication to our Country!

November also features Diabetes Awareness month, National Diabetes Educator Week, and World Diabetes Day. We have been very fortunate to have quality, passionate, long-serving professionals who give their time, committment, and support to your Missouri Coordinating Body (CB) Volunteer Leadership Team: Sharla Fischer, RD,CDE is the 2011-2012 Finance Leader; Mary Lawrence, MSN, RN, CDE, is the 2011-2012 Membership Chair; Chuck Termini, BS RPh is the 2012-2013 Technology/Web Administrator Leader. We have had a busy year! In addition to the Education sessions & events at AADE/Indy, your Board represented Missouri by attending additional programs: I attended the Web Admin Tech Leaders Q&A forum & the AADE Foundation Reception. Sharla, Mary, & I attended the Volunteer Leaders Breakfast program. Mary & I represented the State CB at an all day program in Jefferson City, in September, in conjunction with the Missouri Public Health Deptcalled: Sustainable Diabetes Self-Management Education, Expanding Access. Furthermore, your State & LNG officers have generated ideas that helped AADE lay the foundation for the format of the first ever AADE Regional Program in Kansas City, in March & use in future AADE Regional Programs presented around the country.

Thank you to each of you who attended AADE in Indianapolis & participated in our state of Missouri flag program; I saw our flag stickers on photos from the run/walk, on many of you at the general sessions, in the exhibit hall---even vendors responded to the flag stickers---"I used to live in MO". The flag idea was such a hit, it went “viral” over the National Leaders discussion Board & AADE invited me to submit an article about it for the national Volunteer Leaders Newsletter.

And now a very tough realization: our "founding" Board Members will be leaving their current Positions after a 2 year term, in December & currently, no replacements are in sight! The positions available for 2013, possibly into 2014, are CB Chair, CB Co-Chair, Finance Chair, Professional Development Chair, Advocacy Leader. AADE has generated a Leadership manual to help guide our CB & LNG groups; MO CB made great strides in our 2 founding years, establishing P&P's for additional guidance. We have met in person, twice a year in Columbia & had phone teleconferences 2 to 3 times per year; the future may include Skype meeting formats, etc.

Now YOU have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of diabetes Educators & education by participating with a dynamic group of your peers from around the state of Missouri & the country. Please consider adding AADE Member involvement to your resume. If you can’t commit to a full year commitment, perhaps you can help with Committees or special events or help host a site for webinars & mtgs in 2013. We can only be as strong as your participation, interest and support allows us to be. There is no "I" in team, but there is a "u" in Volunteer!  Are you the "u" we need?

Thank you for your consideration,
