History of Gestational Diabetes and the DPP Program

By Clair Welsh posted 09-29-2017 12:51

When offering your DPP programs, please be sure to include women with a history of gestational diabetes. The CDC guidelines for eligibility include a history of gestational diabetes. This can be a self-reported history. Women who have a history of Gestational Diabetes have a 40% increased risk in the next 10 years of developing Type 2 diabetes. It is also estimated that 70% of women with Gestational Diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes within 22-28 years after pregnancy. In Latin American women, these numbers jump to 60% within 5 years. These statistics are from the ACOG Practice Bulletin Number 180, July 2017 Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. Please be sure that your local OBs and Family Practice physicians know how you can help their patients. If you have a large OB population, consider starting a class focused on these women that is baby friendly. The September issue of In Practice has an interesting article Titled:"How to Build a Business Case for Adding a Diabetes Prevention Service to your Program". Tell me if you have already included these women in your DPP. What are your results?

Dpp program

Is Medicare going to pick up for a diagnosis of Pre-Diabetes even if the group is not part of the DPP program.  Or does the out-patient nutrition counseling department have to apply for the DPP program?
