We are approaching National Diabetes Education Week and I hope you are each proud of the work & passion that you share with your patients/clients! In addition to all the contributions made by you, our Missouri/AADE Members, & your colleagues, I am pleased to review a few accomplishments made by several Missouri Members in the past few months.
Missouri was well represented in the national spotlight of the annual AADE Education Conference, in New Orleans, in August. The 2015 AADE/Missouri Coordinating Body (CB) Leaders: Mary Lawrence, MSN, RN, CDE (St Louis), CB Chair; Nancy Trebilcock, BSN, RN, CDE (Wentzville), CB Web Admin; Leisa Blanchard, BSN, RN, CDE (Lamar), CB Advocacy Leader; and Diane Rowe, MSN, RN, FNPC, (Pineville), CB Board Member, hosted a very successful table display at the CB and COI Networking Event. We were delighted to meet not only Missouri Members, but Members from around the country, almost 100 in all. We showcased the State Insect, Honeybee, with a gift bag of Burt’s Bees Balm & a Bit-o-Honey treat! The CB Team also hosted a Hospitality Room with raffle prizes and refreshments for Missouri Members; it was nice to chat in a casual atmosphere! Dr. Pat Rafferty, PharmD, BCPS, CDE (Saint Louis); Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, St Louis College of Pharmacy presented the session: Glycemic control for patients with cardiovascular disease or at high risk of cardiovascular disease: how low should we go? Sandi Burke, PhD, APRN, BC-ADM, FAADE, FAAN; now Professor & Academic Chair, Undergraduate Programs, at St Louis Barnes-Jewish College, Goldfarb School of Nursing co-presented the session: Jazz it up: Building the CDE – CHW Connection into Your Practice. Patricia (Gaye) Knutsen, MSN, ACNS-BC (Saint Louis), was part of a panel presentation titled: Optimizing CGM: Best Practices for the Diabetes Educator. Martha Riley, RN, BJH-St Louis, presented a Poster: “Diabetes and Mental Illness”. And the highlight of the Conference occurred when AADE President: Debbie Greenwood, presented the “2015 My AADE Coordinating Body Achievement Award” to Missouri CB Chair, Mary Lawrence, MSN, RN, CDE & the Missouri CB Leadership Team!
In other news, Andrew Bzowyckyj, PharmD, BCPS, CDE, (Kansas City)University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Pharmacy presented: Acute Kidney Injury – When Good Medications Go Bad on September 18th. It was a session offered during the the National Kidney Foundation’s Renal Symposium: Primary Care Strategies for Kidney Disease. Congratulations to Leisa Blanchard, BSN, RN, CDE, FNP, CB Advocacy Rep, who completed her Master’s Degree & earned her Nurse Practitioner License a few months ago; she even studied during the evenings of the New Orleans Conference!! Thank you to Diane Rowe, MSN, RN, FNPC, who served the CB Team, on an interim basis, during the AADE Conference; good luck Diane with the CDE exam; she too, was studying during our drive to/from the Conference! Don't forget, the CB Leaders are Volunteers who work, have families, participate in school & church activities, etc .... just like you!!
