WOW, we're already at the end of November! In addition to highlighting our work advocating for and elevating those living with diabetes, I want to acknowledge November as National Native American Heritage month in the Unites States. Diabetes and it's complications disproportionately affect Native Americans*. There are multiple factors that influence the rate of diabetes in this population - you may find this article from diaTribe a helpful place to start: Diabetes in Native Communities in the US.
Additional resources include the CDC Vital Signs Native Americans with Diabetes: Better diabetes care can decrease kidney failure and the Indian Health Service's Special Diabetes Program for Indians.

As Diabetes Care and Education Specialists, we know the importance of healthy eating as part of the framework for diabetes self-management; protein and fiber are nutrition stars helping manage blood sugar and support satiety. Have you heard of the Three Sisters? Beans, corn and squash (great sources of fiber and protein) have cultural, spiritual and agricultural significance to the Native Peoples of North America. A delicious way to incorporate these healthy foods is with Three Sisters Soup.

What's your favorite way to incorporate this delicious trio?

*There are various terms associated with Indigenous Peoples. As someone who is not part of this community, I humbly write this blog recognizing I have much to learn and am doing so with the intent of increasing awareness.
