For this month’s blog, I wanted to highlight and briefly talk about the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP). I have had the pleasure to facilitate this program as a lifestyle health coach. My personal feedback and experience is that the program works. I saw individuals not only meet their health goals but they met them with a very positive attitude. It was refreshing and exciting to see. I share this in hopes that our state continues to grow accredited programs and help individuals that are at high risk of type 2 diabetes to cut their risk in half. What is the NDPP? The NDPP is a national initiative targeting all communities across the United ...

It is our honor to announce that April's CDE of the month is, none other than our very own Chair, Jessica Kirk, MSN, RN, CPN, CDE. Not only is this a blog to share Jessica's story and her positive impact on our New Mexico community but also to say farewell. Jessica was offered and has accepted a position as RN, CDE at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. This is an amazing opportunity and we could not be more happy or proud of Jessica. We know that she will continue to improve and change the lives of individuals living with diabetes. Jessica is a true inspiration and has been a blessing to our community and to our CB Board. It is a bittersweet moment to say goodbye but ...

In Honor of St. Patrick’s Day: Alcohol and Diabetes Jessica Torres, MSN, BC-ADM, RN, CDE, CDTC In my career as a diabetes educator I have heard many mixed messages around alcohol and diabetes. In all honesty, when I bring up alcohol with my patients, many times, it is the first time they have had the subject brought up during a diabetes care appointment. I find this understandable and shocking at the same time. Discussing alcohol consumption with a patient can be a very sensitive subject for many reasons, including: personal convictions about drinking alcohol, fear of the effects of alcohol in combination with diabetes, and also hard to bring up if ...

Call to Action: Exodus of Diabetes Tech Support in New Mexico Jessica Kirk MSN, RN, CPN, CDE New Mexico is in a technology support crisis. In the last month, we have lost local representation from two pump companies, as our state was absorbed by larger service areas. This blog is a review of the technology patterns and resources in the last few years, as well as a call to action so that as a diabetes community we make sure to get involved, stay informed on diabetes technology, offer choices to our patients, and be the support that our patients need to have successful health outcome with their device choice. The downfall of technology in our community ...

We hope everyone is having a great start to 2018! Your local AADE chapter is off and running, and we are starting our new year with a BANG! Our resolution this year is to enhance outreach and communication with our New Mexico members. One way we would like to do this is by rethinking our local name. Instead of calling ourselves ZADE (Zia Association of Diabetes Educators) we are officially now known as AADE NM . Same great group, with what we hope will be a more recognizable title! With the start of the new year AADE NM would like to kick off a new practice: AADE NM CDE of the Month! We think its meaningful and important to highlight a member of our chapter ...

AADE membership provides a great way to connect to a community, whether it’s within your city, state, or on a national level. Some of the perks of membership include a variety of materials provided to members, such as Clinical Endocrinology, AADE In Practice, or The Diabetes Educator Journal. Each of these publications provides insight into research, innovations, and practice happening in our diabetes education community, and can provide inspiration for new ideas within our own practice. I would like to share with you how one of these publications inspired a new way to teach the basics of diabetes management in our setting. Last year, my partner and I were ...

Have you heard about AADE’s state licensure initiative ? We recently had a breakthrough and Kentucky is now the first state to require licenses for diabetes educators. State licensure has many benefits for the future of the profession. Learn more about the initiative by reading our Frequently Asked Questions and listening to the podcast .
