We hope everyone is having a great start to 2018! Your local AADE chapter is off and running, and we are starting our new year with a BANG! Our resolution this year is to enhance outreach and communication with our New Mexico members. One way we would like to do this is by rethinking our local name. Instead of calling ourselves ZADE (Zia Association of Diabetes Educators) we are officially now known as AADE NM. Same great group, with what we hope will be a more recognizable title!

With the start of the new year AADE NM would like to kick off a new practice: AADE NM CDE of the Month! We think its meaningful and important to highlight a member of our chapter who exemplifies the values and leadership of our profession.

The AADE NM CDE of the month for January 2018 is.......... Dee Romine! Dee has joined the AADE NM board, and has hit the ground running by attending the national coordinating body leadership training, and tackling the development of this year’s planning with us! We are grateful to have her expertise and knowledge.

Dee Romine AADE NM CDE of the Month January 2018:

Dee Romine hails from the Midwest, growing up on farm in northern Iowa. She left home and attended Iowa State University where she achieved a B.S. in Nutrition.  Dee did her dietetic internship with Hines Veteran’s Administration in Chicago, Illinois.  She attended the University of Florida, receiving a Master of Agriculture in Nutrition Science.  Few years later, Dee attended University of Kansas where she received her B.S. in Nursing.  Dee did a combined Master of Business Administration and Nursing Science from the University of Phoenix.  She  has maintained her RD, registered dietitian and RN, registered nurse licenses.  She has worked as certified diabetes educator for the past 14 years, working in diabetes for over 20 years.  After 40 years with the government, both with Indian health and veteran’s administration medical centers, Dee recently retired from the New Mexico Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.  Currently, you will find Dee working with Lovelace Endocrinology Practice.

Dee's children are grown and attending college.  She has three sons and a daughter.  Her daughter is sophomore in college in Chicago.  Dee's two younger sons are in college at CNM here in Albuquerque.  Her older son who is disabled, works in town.  He has been her and husband's joy and just celebrated a birthday Christmas Eve! Dee's husband retired last year and loves it.  He keeps up with thier home and has dinner ready at  night.  They enjoy taking classes together; cooking, finance, bridge, and other educational classes.  Her husband also loves to play the drums and keyboards.  They also play some tennis, swim and volleyball during the week.  Dee loves gardening and reading.   She and her husband plan on traveling overseas in the next few years.  They have four pets, two cats who rule the house, Sammy and Kolicee.  They have two dogs, Sparky and Lily who are very lovable.

Dee has also volunteered at the American Diabetes Association Camp 180 for kids with diabetes the last few years.

Congratulations Dee!! You embody the values and qualities of our diverse profession.

Do you have someone in mind (or maybe yourself) that you think might merit recognition next month? If so, please email us at: NewMexicoAADE@gmail.com.  We would love your insight on who YOU think is making a difference in our local AADE community!

We know that an association is driven by the needs of it’s members, which is why we will be sending out a survey shortly to assess the member's needs. Keep an eye out for the link which will be coming soon!

Thanks for being a part of our community – let’s make this an amazing year!
