Spotlight On: New York
By: Patricia Landi Linekin, New York State Coordinating Body Chair
A big New York-style event was planned by the New York State Coordinating Body (NYSCB) to welcome three national AADE guests for the AADE on Location event. The purpose was to enable NY State AADE members to personally interact with AADE's CEO, Charles Macfarlane; AADE's 2014 President, Joan Bardsley; AADE's 2014 Diabetes Educator of the Year, Gary Scheiner.
Our event was held on May 16, 2014 and started at 6pm with a cocktail hour (cash bar) at which time the attendees could enjoy the appetizers as well as take time to visit our 18 vendor tables. All of our Coordinating Body members and honored guests received a lovely corsage or boutonniere. Charles Macfarlane and Joan Bardsley each had a NYSCB member escort them during the cocktail hour to introduce them to the AADE members present as well as to each of the vendors. Patricia Landi Linekin, NYSCB Chair, Marie Schongar, NYSCB Chair-Elect and Hildegarde Payne, NYSCB Past Chair, went to every vendor table to present each vendor with a certificate of appreciation. We also had a professional photographer present the entire evening to capture all the special moments.
During the dinner, from 7-10:30PM, we presented four NY State Diabetes Educator Superstar Awards to NY State members who have distinguished themselves by their expertise and dedication locally, nationally and internationally. The award recipients were: Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, APRN, BC-ADM, MA, CDE, FAADE; Lorena Drago, MS, RD, CDN, CDE; Ginger Kanzer Lewis RNC, Ed.M, CDE, FAADE; and Jane Jeffrie Seley DNP, MPH, BC-ADM, CDE, CDTC. An exciting two-hour CE program was then presented: Joan Bardsley and Charles Macfarlane’s topic was Healthcare Reform – Connecting the Dots and Gary Scheiner’s topic was Bringing Out Your Inner Exercise Expert.
We had a full registration of 149 people for this event and had a waiting list as well. Each guest was given a booklet containing the names of our entire NY State Coordinating Body, Vendors who supported the event, as well as the pictures and short biographies of each one of our honored guests.
Each NYSCB member had assigned tasks and carried them out flawlessly—like a symphony—to make this event a memorable one! All of the NYSCB members remarked that it was an enjoyable, productive, and fun-filled night.
The evening before our big event, many NYSCB members stayed overnight at the hotel. We took advantage of this time to have our first meeting to plan our 2015 Regional Conference in Saratoga Springs, NY and combine it with our first Corporate Advisory Board meeting. In addition, several NYSCB members and our honored guests met the next morning for a networking breakfast at the hotel… a perfect way to end a perfect event!
We are looking forward to our next adventure together in 2015 which will be the April 19-21st: the NYSCB Regional Conference at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs. It is entitled,Diabetes Educators and People with Diabetes: Partners in the Winners’ Circle. We hope you can join us!
