Another Action Alert from ADA - Medical Research Threatened

By Meg Wilson posted 07-12-2015 05:44

The House of Representatives is voting soon on legislation that will provide increased funding for critical medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The bad news: one amendment being considered will put that funding at serious risk.

Will you tell your Representative to reject the Brat Amendment to the 21st Century Cures Act?

H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act, aims to put the U.S. on the path to improved treatments and cures for diseases like diabetes. The bill includes an Innovation Fund, which offers an increase in funding for medical research at NIH and gives hope to people affected by diabetes and other diseases.

But the Brat Amendment will change the way the Innovation Fund works, putting it in direct competition with other important health programs, including the rest of the funding for NIH. Stopping this amendment is key to ensuring the Innovation Fund results in a real increase in research funding and that scientific discoveries become treatment realities for people with diabetes.

Please take action NOW—your representative will be voting on this amendment this week! This vote may be very close, which is why your Representative needs to hear how important research through NIH is to you.

We need Congress to understand the importance of medical research, especially for diabetes! Without increased funding for diabetes research, groundbreaking science will be delayed – or stopped entirely. Providing funds for research and programs is needed for the breakthroughs that can prevent, treat, and ultimately cure diabetes.

Send a message now and ask your Member of the House of Representatives to show support for lifesaving diabetes research.
