The comment period has been extended - I would encourage all Diabetes Educators to make a comment at:
http://www.fda.gov/food/guidanceregulation/guidancedocumentsregulatoryinformation/labelingnutrition/ucm385663.htm
My comments were as follows:
I would remove the % daily value information - this is meaningless and confusing to most people.
I would also remove the gram weight of food after the serving size. This is confusing to most people - many of my patients get it confused for carbohydrate grams.
I am a Registered Dietitian & Certified Diabetes Educator, performing patient education for 24 years.
I also have a Masters Degree in Health Education - you need to remember that the reading level for many people is 8th grade or lower - the less information that is on this label, the better.
Also, people are busy or do not want to be bothered trying to figure food labels out.
They are much more likely to read food labels if they are short and concise.
Thank you!
