Hi all – last night 4 of our Diabetes Team members were fortunate to attend a powerful presentation on the Bionic Pancreas. The presenters were from the Boston group: one of the designers of the system, and a patient with Type 1 diabetes who is a participant in the clinical trial.

This is going to be another huge step forward in improving care/quality of life for people with diabetes.
The target is to get it on the market in 34 months, (but it may take longer due to FDA approval issues, etc).
With each phase of the clinical trials the system is improved.  The current system is 4 pieces but the plan is to integrate most of the components into one device that will include a dual chamber pump (insulin and glucagon), a receiver for the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (2 ports into the body) and then the other piece will be the tiny Dexcom Glucose Sensor/Transmitter.  So 3 punctures into the body, but a small price to pay for safety and freedom J…
The audience members were patients and many local diabetes health care providers and they were enthusiastically cheering throughout.
It is very exciting and I wanted to share with all of you! Have a great day….
