Join Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Certified Spanish tutor Ilene Cohen, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE, for a webinar that will educate and inspire you to speak and understand basic Spanish vocabulary, phrases and grammar that apply to your diabetes nutrition education and counseling practice. There will be time for you to practice speaking during the webinar in the comfort of your home or office. You will receive practical written and online resources that you can use immediately to develop your Spanish speaking skills and be able to speak Spanish with your patients with diabetes. Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:

  • Learn and understand basic Spanish vocabulary, phrases, and grammatical structures related specifically to the diabetes nutritional counseling and education to be able to establish basic rapport with their patients/clients who have Type 1 diabetes Type 2 Diabetes, or Gestational Diabetes


  • Learn to give a basic carbohydrate counting educational session in Spanish.


  • Learn how the ability to communicate in Spanish can improve communication with patients and clients leading to improved health outcomes and a reduced risk of diabetes related complications.


  • Acquire an array of online and print resources, including handouts, apps, websites and cookbooks to help RDNs improve their Spanish speaking and comprehension skills as they relate to diabetes self management education.

FOR CDEs: This Course Qualifies for CE Credit! 

To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE, www.ncbde.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the NCBDE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an NCBDE recognized provider. Because Dietitian Central has been granted accreditation by the CDR, it therefore meets the criteria as an approved provider of CEs for CDEs by the NCBDE. The NCBDE does not directly approve continuing education for any specific webinar or self study course.

About the Presenter: Ilene Cohen, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE, E-RYT

Ilene Cohen, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE, E-RYT, is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Registered Yoga Teacher with over 14 years of experience providing Medical Nutrition Therapy, diabetes education classes, and insulin pump trainings in Spanish to Spanish speaking patients across the lifecycle. Ilene has used her fluency in spoken and written Spanish to communicate with over 85% of her patient population in various hospitals, clinics and diabetes centers in the New York City area, and is now expanding her private practice to reach Spanish speaking clients in need of her services. 

As a Certified Spanish tutor, Ilene drew upon her experience tutoring Spanish to high school students and adults to develop a Continuing Professional Education course designed especially for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. Ilene has presented a webinar on this topic for the Nutrition Entrepreneurs DPG and Dietitian Central and is excited to continue working with Dietitian Central to bring this topic to RDNs across the country. Ilene is passionate about sharing her Spanish teaching skills with RDNs in all practice settings who want to learn the language to improve communication with their clients, while increasing their professional skills development and career enhancement.
