Camping! (July's Blog)

By Chris Memering posted 08-01-2014 15:04

Somehow the month always changes on me too fast.  : )

As summer is fast ending and we are gearing up for our National Meeting, I wanted to let you all know how your CB is helping supporting kids with diabetes in our state.  The board approved giving a donation of $250 to each of three camps in NC that we had great contact information.  Below are 2 of the camps that received money.  The third is Camp Needles in the Pines in Greenville, NC.  Unfortunately communication problems got the better of us and camp happened before we could make a donation.  Mindy Saenz, RD, LDN, CDE had some pretty great pictures from camp on her Facebook page.

If you have camp we didn’t know about or have JDRF, Step Out or Tour de Cure event that you feel the State should help with, please let us know through your LNG Leader so we can consider them.  If you are not a member of an LNG, you can email me directly at cmemering@carolinaeasthealth.com.  You do such a good job helping to support people with diabetes and events that help them, we want to make sure to support you.

And remember, if we will see you in Florida, make sure to come by the Networking Event on Tuesday evening and meet most of your CB.

The cost is $100 for the 3 days. It will be held at Nation’s Ford High School campus this year, from July 18-20.

The mailing address is:

Camp Carolina Trails is a nationally recognized American Diabetes Association camp for children living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. This residential camp for 190 children entering grades 3 through 11 will be held June 15 through 21, 2014. Camp includes many sports and activities such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, and arts and crafts. It will be held at YMCA Camp Hanes on 400 acres next to Hanging Rock State Park. We strive to use teachable moments for the children rather than diabetes classes. Campers are housed in well maintained cabins with adult chaperones. Experienced personnel include a complete medical staff of pediatric endocrinologists, physician assistants, registered nurses and registered dietitians, many of whom are also certified diabetes educators. The cost to the camper’s family is $700 for the week, but the value is much higher, both intrinsically as well as financially.

Any funds donated would go toward “camperships” for those families in need of financial assistance to cover the camp costs.
