Hello,
I hope that wherever you are in our great and vast universe, that you are well, safe, and secure. But we know that is not so for many others. Knowing that having diabetes puts one in a high risk category, what can you share with your patients, friends, and fellow mankind? Glucose control is the key. Hasn't it always been?
What should people with diabetes do?
Plan ahead of what to do to prepare for illness much the same way you plan for sick days.
- Keep well hydrated
- Monitor your blood glucose
- Monitor your temperature
- If on insulin, monitor your ketone bodies
- Follow the recommendations of your healthcare team
- Keep contact information of your healthcare provider at hand
- Have an adequate stock of medication and supplies for monitoring blood glucose at home so you do not have to leave your home while you are sheltering.
If you have the virus, what now?
- Your glycemic control may deteriorate during illness
- Practice "Sick Day Rules"!
- Contact your healthcare provider because you may need adjustments in medication, diet, and monitoring.
- If you develop fever and shortness of breath, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Thank you everyone and stay safe!
