I feel it is becoming more common to be unsure of the type of diabetes at time of diagnosis in the hospital settings. In previous years diagnoses were frequently determined by age. Children were type 1, juvenile, or insulin dependent while adults were type 2 or non-insulin dependent. Now we find ourselves often times in a "gray area" trying to determine a diagnosis. Type 1.5 or "latent autoimmune diabetes of adults" (LADA) is now recognized and over recent years I have personally seen it more frequently. As if diabetes was not already complex?? I found this article to be helpful (for myself) and the more astute patients.
