Bariatric Surgery in Teens

Wow, I was not aware that bariatric surgeries were being done in this population. It is such a shame that we live in a society where 1 in 3 kids are overweight. I agree, prevention is key, but with the way portions continue to grow and the kids become less active I do not foresee an improvement. I hope I am wrong!

With that being said, it is hard to argue with the results documented. These studies showed significant decreases in BMI and improvements in overall health. Decreased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and organ damage at such a young age should not be discounted. I am glad to see strict guidelines to be met prior to surgery, as well as close follow up afterward. I too am interested in what results look like 10-15 years out  compared to 3 years. Thank you for Sharing!
