Lolis Rochas decided to specialize in diabetes because of personal reasons: she had lost many family members to diabetes. Before earning her baccalaureate in nursing, she worked as a Medical Assistant and Research Coordinator at the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center (HSDHC) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). After earning her nursing degree, she worked in the emergency department at OHSU, and she was named the Glycemic Champion for her unit.
After working in the emergency room, Lolis returned to HSDHC as the Clinical Services Program Manager, and most recently she joined the diabetes education team as the Outreach Coordinator for the Latino community in the HSDHC. In this capacity, she has led several diabetes outreach efforts, including delivering diabetes education in Spanish to community health workers, patients, and caregivers.
Lolis is also involved in a collaborative outreach programs with OHSU partners and satellite clinics targeting Latinos. She also volunteers at local primary care clinics to provide diabetes education in Spanish.
