ODE 25th Annual Conference, April 8th and 9th, 2011

146 diabetes educators attended the 2011 ODE 25th Anniversary Conference that was held on April 8th and 9th, 2011 at the Embassy Suites in Tigard, Oregon.  The Professional Education Committee did a wonderful job in their selection of the speakers and venue.

The lecture series started out with a bang on Friday, April 8th, as Denise Cedar kept the audience captivated with her talk on Celiac Disease & Diabetes.  Dr. Carla Greenbaum, the director of Benaroya Research Institute in Seattle continued carrying the excitement when she taught us about the promising research that’s going on and how we can refer our patients and patient’s relatives to receive this wonderful benefit. Dr. Tanya Page kept us spellbound with her discussion on diabetes in the homeless. Her compassion and ability to suspend judgment reminded us to demonstrate the same qualities. Friday ended with Elaine Cochran’s expertise on Regular U-500 insulin, a useful armament in severe insulin resistance. Many thanks to Elaine, who had refused to succumb to pressure to avoid travelling to Oregon because Congress hadn’t passed the budget yet.  She came anyway. Thank you, Elaine.

Friday’s membership meeting included honoring two of our distinguished ODE members: The Educator of the Year award went to Tracy Davis, RN, CDE and the Distinguished Service Award went to Terry Cornell, RN, CDE. Congratulations to both of the recipients.

The 25th Anniversary Reception and Celebration brought many retired friends together as they celebrated with the current ODE members. Adding to the event, many of these pioneers in diabetes education and ODE put in their recollections of what it was like in “the olden days” (25 years ago). I think everyone will remember the “ketchup bottle” technique of treating diabetes complications! Going down memory lane was enjoyable for our founding foremothers, as well as the rest of our members and conference attendees. The appetizers were a meal in themselves. The choices by Cameo Mgmt Company (Maggie) and Samaritan Health were delectable!

Saturday proved to be as exciting as Friday. We started our day bright and early with Tai Chi then got a fresh look at incretins by Virginia Valentine. We may see more incretins recommended after her enlightening presentation. Carole DeFrancesco lived up to her reputation as a Portland expert in motivational interviewing. Her lively discussion unlocked doors for many educators. Please see the AADE/OR website for handouts that she sent to us after the conference.  Minoo Nowak was next as she explained how problems in the very elderly can be completely different than the more youthful patient. She also illustrated how to spot drug problems and how to correct them—very important with any patient. And who could forget Bob Thompson’s invigorating presentation as he brought the conference to an end with an enthusiastic talk on foot care? Who’d have thought that feet could be interesting?

We want to thank each speaker for ODE’s 25th Anniversary Conference. Each one gave a fabulous presentation. We are very privileged to have such qualified speakers at the state/local level.

Evaluations and Certificates were received through Survey Monkey. Kirsten and her IT team did a great job of preparing the electronic evaluations. It was a snap to complete the survey this year.

The basket raffle generated another $678 for scholarships to the annual ODE conference. Remember to apply for a scholarship for next year’s conference. Thank you to Jamie Brown and her basket raffle committee, to all the basket donors and raffle ticket buyers. Basket donors were Providence Health, SamHealth/Teresa Cochran, Asante, Christine Olinghouse, Dona Thornton, Gloria Vandehey and Cascade Health Solutions. Others were donated, but donors were not available at publishing date.

Many thanks to our industry partners! Without their exhibits, our yearly conference would not be complete.
