New Medicare Guidelines for CGM by Katy Hawkins

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have announced some adjustments to their CGM policy that will go into effect on July 18th.  Historically, Medicare required patients to test their blood sugar 4x/day to be a candidate for CGM. The new policy has removed all BG testing requirements.  Patients still need to be taking insulin at least 3 times a day or using an insulin pump. Previously, the criteria only including insulin via injections, however, the new policy adds inhaled insulin to the approved methods of insulin delivery.

The new policy can be found at https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/details/lcd-details.aspx?lcdid=33822

This is progress! Patients who need this technology will be able to acquire it without the BG logs. Next I hope to see all insulin deficient patients able to get this technology, regardless of the number of injections/day.
