Daylight Savings Considerations

By Megan Watts posted 03-31-2022 12:23

Depending on where you live in the United States, daylight savings time is here once again. It has pros and cons.  Some people don’t like losing an hour of sleep, yet others like the extra daylight. The time change can impact circadian functions, which intern can lead to dysfunction and metabolic, behavioral and cognitive abilities. This can throw off not only sleep cycles, but blood glucose levels.  If in the days and weeks to come, you are helping a person problem solve variable blood glucose levels, think about the following:

1. Did the person change the time on their insulin pump?

2. Is their body still having metabolic/hormonal changes while adjusting to the time change?  Might they need medication adjustments including insulin pump
setting changes?

3. Has the person changed their eating or activities resulting in a new blood glucose pattern? Might they need a potential medication or insulin pump setting change?

Does daylight savings affect people with diabetes? I think we can all agree, everyBODY is different.

Any change in  time affects our persons with diabetes.  Many of my patients do not change their times on the their devices despite being instructed to do so.  This adds extra time to the staff when performing downloads and sometimes playing detectives for us as educators to determine the blood sugar download data.
