Sneak Peak of the PA State Diabetes Conference

Hello PA State diabetes educators,

I have had the privilege of working with the speakers for our state meeting in May and recently compiled the objectives for each presentation. I am blown away by what we are going to learn - this will be an awesome conference. Adina Gutstein, MSN, CRNP, CLS, FPCNA, a cardiovascular nurse practitioner will be telling us about novel biomarkers of glycemia and cardiovascular disease. So the next time you get one of those lab reports with cardiovascular markers you will be in a better position to review the implications with your patients. Jeffrey Harris, DrPH, MPH, RD, LDN, FAND, chair of the Nutrition Department at Westchester University, will be discussing the evidence regarding saturated fat and heart disease. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm confused - does saturated fat matter or doesn't it? He will also address the interplay of carbohydrate and saturated fat as they relate to heart disease.

And of course we have Amparo Gonzalez, MPH, RN, CDE and former AADE president. She will be providing us with concrete culturally appropriate interventions that we can use with our Latino patients with diabetes. Dr. Jeffrey Joseph will be speaking to us about the future of the artificial pancreas in ambulatory and hospitalized patients. This isnt stuff he's reading about - he is in the trenches doing the research. I've heard him speak several times and am always so inspired by his passion, enthusiasm and dedication to making the lives of our patients with T1 diabetes better. We will learn the advantages and disadvantages of long term implantable CGMS, insulin pumps, control algorithms and artificial pancreas systems under development.

One of our very own PA state educators from Penn State Hershey, Mary Collins, RN, CDE, will be speaking to us about hands on educational strategies that can make a greater impact on our patients. She will use the skill of story telling and show us tried and true creative techniques to help us in our patient education. She is also putting together a basket of educational tools that will be raffled off during her presentation!

There are 10 high caliber speakers who will be sharing information we can use in our day to day practices.  Add that to a fabulous venue at the Harrisburg Hilton and - hopefully - warm weather in May - and we'll have the makings of a great 2 day program. All meals and snacks included.

Share this information with your colleagues who are not diabetes educators but work with patients with diabetes - there is something for everyone and all health care professionals are welcome. We are applying for 10.25 continuing education credits for RN's, RD's, PharmD's and CDE's.

We need more CDE's and what a great place to show off all that we do in order to generate interest in seeking the CDE credential.

See you in Harrisburg!
