Congratulate Emily not only on becoming Certified, but also because she is involved in her LNG leadership as well as being part of the PA coordinating body.

Read her story below:

Becoming a CDE

C.D.E. Three small letters, with very big meaning behind them. Since I started with PinnacleHealth System in Harrisburg, PA in 2015 as a diabetes nurse educator, I knew I would be obligated to obtain my CDE. In order to do so, I had to accrue 1,000 patient contact hours. Though this may seem like an easy task, it is not. It took nearly 2 years, working fulltime to do so. I really had no idea what to expect in preparing for the exam. I started my preparation in August 2016 with hopes of testing after the New Year in 2017. I did a little bit each week, so come crunch time I would not be scrambling. While sitting in meetings with other CDE’s (who tested years ago) they will lean over and say, “Make sure you know that for the exam”, or “that will be on your exam”. It felt overwhelming at times and I often wondered how I will know for sure what to study. My best advice is to utilize the available resources out there, and take as many practice tests as you can. The week of the exam seemed to approach very quickly. I had a study guide prepared, and while I did not follow it exactly I got the material reviewed that I needed to. The day of the exam was nerve wracking because it was an afternoon test. I found myself pacing my house just to pass the time. Finally, it was time. I completed the exam in 2 hours, which to some may be quick, however the testing room was very warm and I felt like I was ready. Once the proctor handed me my certificate I could breathe a sigh of relief. I had passed! I walked out of the testing center with a big smile and my head held high. I have joined an elite crew. In my job, having CDE behind my name now allows me more privileges than just having “RN, BSN”. There is also a great level of respect that comes with this certification. Respect from peers, colleagues, and patients. Obtaining this was something I knew had to be done, but I was also very scared to do so. I had great support from my coworkers and I feel like I have made them proud. I would strongly encourage anyone out there who is “on the fence” about taking the exam to do so! It will be well worth it in the end.

Becoming a CDE

I am also proud of Emily for many reasons! Before becoming a CDE Emily recognized the importance of joining AADE. Many people commonly think they must be a CDE FIRST- not so. There are many benefits including access to 20 contact hours on the website, journals, and reduced rates for meeting attendance. My favorite benefit is networking both in person through participation in the Local Networking Groups (LNGs) and virtually through participation in the communication threads in the Community of Interests (COIs). Emily became a leader early on for Central Pennsylvania. She has contributed as a board member of the PA Coordinating Body representing her physical location in Pennsylvania as well as her age bracket! We need Emily and are proud to serve alongside of her. Emily has participated in a number of advocacy meetings in Harrisburg - meeting with our State Representative Tallman supporting licensure, attended our hearing before the State Licensure Committee last year, and worked the health fair at the World Diabetes Day celebrations in the Rotunda in the Capitol!

My sincere thanks and congratulations Emily-well deserved!
