Responding to the challenges of delivering diabetes education
As diabetes educators we have the ability and responsibility to build collaborative relationships.
I am working part-time in an Out-Patient Diabetes Education ADA recognized program – the Center is also staffed by an RN CDE and an Advanced Practice Nurse CDE who is our program coordinator. One of the issues we deal with along with many other educators is how to reduce the number of no show appointments, schedule clients in a timely manner in an accessible location and ensure high satisfaction with our services. In my area a new endocrinologist office recently opened. The office is staffed by two endocrinologists, an RN CDE, Medical Assistants and support staff. One of our Center’s goals was to expand services at different locations. The physicians also requested that services be offered at their office location. A plan was developed with the intent to provide individual/group diabetes education and Medical Nutrition therapy in the physician practice location.
Here is a summary of what I learned throughout this journey.
Planning/coordination is key – allow a 3-6 month time frame from planning – implementation. Coordinate with all departments
- Information Technology
- Central Scheduling
- Registration
- Administration
- Team Members
- Volunteers
- Etc.
Be sure to assess need for equipment, space, marketing, directions to office, cross-training between departments/team members.
Get everyone involved. Our Office Manager scheduled time for each team member to visit the new site. Clinical staff trained to complete off-site registration. Clinical staff gained access to physician EMR. Additional computer, scanner, television ordered and installed; file cabinet for storage of educational materials. New location added to central scheduling system. Application submitted to ADA to request addition of new site.
We are excited to begin these services at our new location and look forward to a collaborative relationship delivering quality patient care.
Does anyone else want to share their experiences?
Every day is a new adventure and we are up for it!
