Hello Pennsylvania members of AADE

The CB sends everyone experiencing the impact of Sandy our good wishes and prayers for a quick recovery.DSC00463.JPG

On Saturday, October 20, 2012 the Pennsylvania Coordinating Body of AADE (PA CB) met for its planned live meeting. The CB structure policy calls for 2 live meetings/year. As good as technology is with email, lists servs and conference calls, nothing beats a face to face meeting. I really think the October meeting gives us the best opportunity to work together and plan events for Pennsylvania. Using this blog area is a great way to connect with all members and share the substance of the meeting. So I’ve been back 2 weeks and still working on getting up the nerve to write again. You can reference my last attempt “Blog, who me”

We spent a lot of time working on our 2nd Annual meeting. Last year’s meeting was such a great success and the CB is working hard to again plan an excellent event. We will be using the same Gettysburg Wyndham this year. If anyone has ideas for a new location next year, please make sure you send them to us. We are so excited that we have almost double the space as last year and have blocked over 100 guest rooms in the Wyndham. We hope to avoid some of the challenges from last year. Keep an eye on the My AADE Network for more details. Vendor registration should open in December, and Member early discount again for January. We are still working on the details of speakers; hope to have more information out to you soon.

Maybe the most exciting development from this meeting is the commitment of the CB to develop a Pennsylvania Scholarship for the annual AADE meetings. We will be funding this program initially from the CB treasury, but you will see fundraiser at the state’s annual meeting to continue funding this program. The LNG gift baskets were such a success that we are bringing them back, but this year all proceeds will go to continuing the scholarship program.

Other topics included continuing to evaluate licensure for diabetes educators in Pennsylvania. If you have not listened to the podcast of our Town Hall call, follow this link: http://www.diabeteseducator.org/PolicyAdvocacy/State_Licensure_Initiative.html  Scroll down the page and click on the podcast graphic next to our Town Hall call area. We continue to want to hear your thoughts and by following this link you can share your thoughts in a statewide discussion thread. http://www.myaadenetwork.org/p/fo/st/thread=10784

Our working lunch was supported by Animas. A great big thank you for the feast! We wrapped up the day by saying good bye and thank you to members who will step down at the end of the year. Kristin Haugh, Vanessa Snell, Terri Epler, Arlene Felecia, Jean Kovaleski, Lisa Miller, your energy will be missed. But we also welcome Pat Wolf (CEPLNG), Lisa Laird (SEPALNG), & Eileen Komar (LVPLNG), and look forward to having these new creative team members on the CB. The team leaders for 2013 will be Pat Adams, CB Chair; Marilyn Clougherty, Education Lead; Judy Barkanic, Finance Lead; Rosemary Takacs, Advocacy Lead and Diane Harbaugh Technology Lead.

So I understand the average person spends about 90 seconds reading a blog. I hope you can spend a little more time. Join the discussion; let us know your concerns. The CB looks forward to continuing working for the Pennsylvania members.

New Member Perspective!

Thank you Pat, Lisa Miller and the others in Gettysburg for the warm welcome. I sincerely enjoyed the day getting to know one another and learning the job roles and expectations. I am thankful for the leadership that each of you provided formulating the State Coordinating Body and Local Networking Groups! It's my pleasure to follow such an amazing group and look forward to our growth professionally as we serve together passionately to forward health and improve the quality of life for those we touch in our practice of diabetes education. This is, after all, the thread that binds us regardless of our discipline.

I encourage everyone to come out to our State Conference in April - it was rewarding to be with like-minded educators facing the same challenges and rewards we see in daily practice- and it was fun!

Upcoming PA state meeting

Great post Pat!  Look forward to another great meeting in Gettysburg.  Thanks for all the work you and team are doing to prepare for it!  I also had a chance to listen in on the state licensure podcast.  Very helpful to get this perspective.  Encourage others to listen to this if you have not yet had a chance.
