The 26th Annual UPADE Diabetes Conference on 11/7/13 in Greenville was just wonderful.

We had a good variety of speakers and topics this year, which will help add to our diabetes management toolbox. It was an honor to have the 2013 Diabetes Educator of the Year, Joanne Rinker, MS, RD, CDE, LDN speak on the relationship between diabetes, hearing loss, and depression. One take away point from her talk is the need to include auditory and depression screening as part of baseline assessments for people with diabetes.

Kayce Shealy, PhamD did a great job with the Pharmacology Update. Treatment guidelines for type 2 diabetes were reviewed, and she gave a good overview of Invokana. I particularly liked the use of case studies. Sanjay Kapur, PhD, MBA was a very interesting and interactive speaker. I found the link between insulin resistance and hormone imbalance intriguing.

Breakout sessions consisted of information on wound care, clinical trial research, and the management of glucose, lipids, and blood pressure. Kim Saunders, MSN, ED, CWON was very informative about wound prevention and current wound treatments. She brought lots of gross pictures, luckily this was after lunch. Nancy Durham, DNP, FNP-BC, CDE brought us up to date on the clinical trials process.

Lastly, Drs. Sarah Wagner and Eileen Ward connected the dots between glucose, lipid, and blood pressure management. Their use of case studies in the session helped to provide a better understanding of current practice guidelines. Of course we had many vendors and a wonderful lunch for networking. Overall this meeting was a success and cannot wait till next year. The planning committee hopes you will mark your calendars for next year - November 6, 2014!
