August Blog—Kayce Shealy, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP

Next week will be my first time at AADE’s Annual Meeting and Exhibition and I’m looking forward to it.  I’ve heard that it is a great meeting for anyone working in the diabetes field to attend and network with professionals from across the country.  The line-up of keynote speakers is very intriguing, although I am a little disappointed that Paula Deen is no longer on the itinerary.  From personal triumphs with Phil Southerland to obesity management with Dr. Arya Sharma, I’m sure the general sessions will be at capacity.  I am personally struggling to put together a session schedule as there are many interesting talks to choose from.  This meeting has a little of everything for every professional, and all facets of diabetes management and care.  If only I could clone myself to attend concurrent sessions…  Some of the sessions I am particularly interested in deal with weight management strategies, nutrition, and practice models.  Nutrition is an area that most of the patients I see are interested in, and I find myself always looking for new ideas or ways to share healthy eating tips.  Weight management is another area of practice that I am beginning to deal more with, not only in patients with diabetes but also in those who are at risk of developing the disease.  Other items on my to-do list at the meeting in addition to attending the general and breakout sessions: visit the exhibit hall to learn more about the products and services available, providing moral support to my student during the poster presentation on Wednesday, meeting diabetes professionals from SC and across the country, and exploring Philadelphia.  I hope I can still find time to sleep!

Hope to see you in Philadelphia!

AADE13 Annual Meeting Sharing

One of my favorite sessions took place on Friday morning at the general session. The topic title was "Guided Imagery and the New Mind-Body Breakthroughs in Diabetes Care" The speaker was a psychotherapist and author, Belleruth Naparstek, LSW, BCD. She reviewed the latest research related mind-body resources with a focus on program ideas and practice solutions for stress, fitness and sleep. Later, the suthor was available at the AADE Bookstore for a book signing and dialogue with members. Her ideas are very practical and can be found in her book and Guided Imagery CD. I had the opportunity to purchase the book and CD followed by a personal meeting with the author! I plan to use some of her solutions at my Metabolic Syndrome Bootcamp during the stress management discussion. This was just one example of how we can take home so many resources from the AADE Annual Conferences.

Please share your own experiences and take home Annual Meeting messages, resources and materials. Other members will certainly appreciate your efforts.

Looking forward

I too am looking forward to an information packet meeting.  It is almost overboard with topics.  There are so many practical approaches to managing the multiple issues.  I look forward to seeing you there in the SC preferred seating!
