April 2018 Blog – It Starts With Food During the month of April, I read the book “It Starts With Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. The Hartwig’s are the husband/wife team behind the Whole 30 meal plan. As a RDN, I think it is important to be informed about alternative meal plans and right now the Whole 30 is very popular. The first thing I looked at was the credentials of the authors. According to the website http://whole9life.com/about-us/ Dallas Hartwig, MS, PT is a functional medicine practitioner (under the mentoring of Dr. Daniel Kahlish), Certified Sports Nutritionist, and licensed physical therapist. The day after I wrote the January 2018 piece, my oldest child developed a debilitating, mysterious condition that we are still trying to puzzle out. For the entire month of February, it has consumed my life and left me with an overwhelming to-do list. Adding to my frustration is that there is no closure or explanation to why this condition persists or why it developed in the first place. This must be how many people feel after having a family member diagnosed with diabetes. There is an overwhelming feeling that the family’s entire lifestyle needs to be adjusted ...

AADE = American Association of Diabetes Educators BC-ADM = Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management The person holding the BC-ADM credential skillfully manages complex patient needs and assists ...

Have you heard about AADE’s state licensure initiative ? We recently had a breakthrough and Kentucky is now the first state to require licenses for diabetes educators. State licensure has many benefits for the future of the profession. Learn more about the initiative by reading our Frequently Asked Questions and listening to the podcast . If you have any further questions, email advocacy@aadenet.org .

Lots of information presented on the new AADE network changes. This means we will be have more opportunities for networking within the state and nationally. We will have access to all the SPG's after we have paid our 2011 dues (as early as January 1). We will be looking for volunteers to help with different duties within our new state network. Lots of new information on getting the right volunteers matched with the right tasks. Look into becoming part of the network.
