Katrina, Harvey, Gustav, Rita, Ike…. Just a few of the familiar names that strike some concern, when we link them to the word "HURRICANE". Besides tropical storms and floods, Texas has suffered devastating fires, tornadoes, and explosions. We have had power outages and road closures, and we are ever on-guard now for possible terrorism.
Diabetes and disasters are a life-threatening combination. Being prepared is the best antidote to avoid or minimize tragedy.
This weekend, you can purchase certain emergency preparation supplies, tax-free, during the 2018 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase. You don’t need any coupons or other certificates. This year’s holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 30. For a complete list of eligible items, please see the Texas.gov website at https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-1017.php . Also, don’t forget that AADE has a disaster preparedness page which is found on the AADE home page under the “LIVING WITH DIABETES" tab. Click on the tab, and a drop down box will appear to show “Disaster Preparedness”.
