You should consider becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE ) if you are working with diabetic patients regardless of your position. Whether you are a dietitian, pharmacist, nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or doctor being a CDE legitimizes your position regardless of the type of practice. Many employers look for employees who are CDEs. Being a CDE demonstrates to potential employers that you are a competent diabetes educator. For example if you are working in an office, having your CDE gives you an advantage because you are considered the expert. Being a CDE provides credibility, allows you more advancement in your career and to be a more independent and flexible practitioner.
Any professional with a CDE can educate patients about diabetes and related topics. The CDE helps facilitate the prevention, progression and further complications of diabetes. When you teach your patients as a CDE, your patients become empowered to control their diabetes
Being a CDE is a rigorous process that is ongoing and demonstrates that you are up to date with the latest information regarding diabetes. It sets you apart from other providers; therefore, having your CDE is a great source of pride. Your patients deserve the best and being a CDE is one way to show that they are going to receive the best care.
