Hello Virginia Stakeholders interested in Diabetes and Diabetes Prevention!

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Virginia Diabetes Prevention Strategic Plan (2017-2018).

During 2016, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) contracted with the Virginia Center for Diabetes Prevention and Education at the University of Virginia (VCDPE) to conduct formative research and interview key stakeholders throughout Virginia to assess the status of diabetes prevention efforts in Virginia.

In late September 2016, VDH, in conjunction with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors and the VCDPE, conducted a State Engagement meeting to engage diabetes stakeholders in Virginia to scale and sustain the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) in Virginia.

Based on the formative research findings in Virginia and the State Engagement meeting report, a strategic plan was developed to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in Virginia.

The Strategic Plan provides a framework for the next two years with key goals, objectives, and strategies to help Virginians initiate efforts to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

An outline of the plan recommends action in four priority areas that have been identified by CDC to scale and sustain the NDPP and include:

  1. Awareness of Prediabetes
  2. Clinical Screening, Testing, and Referral
  3. Coverage of CDC-recognized Lifestyle Change Program
  4. Availability and Support

The Virginia Diabetes Council has agreed to incorporate this plan into its scope of work for 2017-2018 and use stakeholders to further the work of building and sustaining diabetes prevention programs in Virginia.

The Diabetes Prevention Strategic Plan is available online and can be found on any one of the following websites:

Please take time to read this plan.  We welcome your comments and involvement with the Virginia Diabetes Council to accomplish the work that needs to be done to move diabetes prevention forward in Virginia!

Sincerely,
