This month my blog is going to be a bit off the beaten path.  As a member of the local chapter for many years I guess you would now consider me to be an old timer, I have seen many changes in my 17 years as a member of Capitol ADE.  Happily over the past year I have watched a very dedicated group of individuals work diligently try to bring back the old days of networking and camaraderie that has always existed.   So I am asking you to support this enthusiastic board and get involved!   I know, we are all very busy with work and family, however do we not have an obligation to give back to an organization that has supported us for all these years?

Do you not have an obligation to help mentor the young men and women who are entering our profession?  Do you not have an obligation to grow more diabetes educators?   New changes allow individuals to use volunteer hours to apply toward taking the certification exam, we need more educators to help the thousands of individuals who have diabetes in our area.

We encourage our patients to be role models for their families, I encourage you to become a role model in your organization, engage others to become diabetes educators, get re-engaged with the DC Coordinating Body the new name for Capitol ADE and bring your co-workers into the fold.

Join your peers by attending the Annual Dinner meeting on October 24, 2013   at Indique Heights

2 Wisconsin Circle, Chevy Chase, MD 20815 from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm.  Just  (1/2 block from Friendship Heights Metro).  Register on MY AADE Network Website at: http://www.myaadenetwork.org/p/cm/ld/fid=1536

Let’s make our memories a reality and share with the younger generation of educators our commitment and enthusiasm.

Wish more people would see this post. Comments well said.We do need to encourage future diabetes educators. We also have a lot of work to do to get employers to recognize what we do beyond teaching someone how to give insulin. It is amazing how many truly lack the understanding of what we do; or have the potential to do. Although most educators are not driven by their income we have seen educators leave because the financial environment is not keeping up with the times. AADE has provided us with a wonderful tool to help outline competencies and the different levels of a diabetes educator but unfortunatley we have yet to see this adopted or even used as a foundation for the role in many facilities. One person can help make changes but a team of people with the same committment certainly can do more.
