Indiana AADE members have been working hard since the beginning of the Indiana legislative session which began in January 2017, contacting and meeting with legislators, urging their support of the HB1642: Diabetes in Indiana.
HB1642 reads, in part:
The legislative council is urged to assign to the appropriate
study committee during the 2017 interim the task of studying goals,
benchmarks, and plans to reduce the incidence of diabetes in
Indiana, improve diabetes care, and control complications
associated with diabetes, including the following:
(1) An assessment of the financial impact and reach of
diabetes of all types in Indiana.
(2) The benefits of current programs to address diabetes.
(3) Identifying current and collaborative efforts to address
diabetes.
This bill first passed through the Indiana House of Representatives on February 7, 2017 and then the Indiana Senate on April 4, 2017. Governor Holcomb signed the bill into law on April 12, 2017. The Indiana Legislative Council was the final step in the process.
The Council met today to vote on the final interim study committees.
Thanks to the grass roots advocacy efforts of Indiana AADE diabetes educators, the diabetes interim study committee will convene late this summer. Hoosier diabetes educators will now get to work compiling information and ideas for the legislators on the study committee to highlight the work and importance of diabetes educations and DSMES.
