Exciting new data from the SURPASS-EARLY trial was just published, and it might change how we think about treating recently diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes (T2D)!
We've long known that aggressive, early intervention in T2D can dramatically improve long-term outcomes and prevent cardiovascular or microvascular complications. But a new 2-year study comparing tirzepatide to intensified conventional care in people with early-stage T2D (diagnosed within the last 4 years) shows just how achievable optimal disease management can be.
Here are the results after two years of treatment:
-
60.2% of participants on tirzepatide achieved normoglycemia (HbA1c < 5.7%), compared to just 24% of participants receiving standard intensive care.
-
Participants on tirzepatide lost an average of 13.8 kg (about 30 lbs), compared to 5.9 kg in the conventional care group.
-
Tirzepatide also led to superior reductions in waist circumference and significant improvements in insulin sensitivity and pancreatic β-cell function.
These findings reinforce the idea that intervening early with highly effective, disease-modifying therapies like tirzepatide could fundamentally change the trajectory of early-stage Type 2 Diabetes.
